Inspired by Metamorphoses, the work of the ancient Roman poet Ovid, this experimental short film, combines luscious sensuality with myth. The French narrator tells the story of Hermaphroditus as the images depict flowing images of water, cloth, and nude bodies.
In Greek Mythology, Hermaphroditus was the beautiful child of Aphrodite and Hermes (Mercury and Venus) . Bathing, he was set upon by a nymph who had been stalking him drawn to his beauty. In the water, the nymph encircled him and prayed to the gods to unite them. The child became bisexual as a result of their bodies blending together. Hermaphroditus, who was frequently portrayed as a female figure with male genitalia, came to represent androgyny or effeminacy.
The film uses poetry to complement the metaphorical imagery and encourages the viewer to indulge in sensuality.
French filmmaker Samuel Bester is a video artist. In his biography at Film Freeway he says:
“By exploring ambiguity through nuance, distortion or accident, I increase the dynamics between perception, interpretation and emotion. Using an often metaphorical poetic language, I amplify curiosity by blurring apparent meanings, thus producing unexpected mental images.”
